Elysia 3

  1. ELYSIA 3 - A black ink and gray color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the book, "Elysia: the Coming of Cthulhu," by Brian Lumley, published by Ganley in 1989.

Jane Yolen wrote a story in which a prophet tells the king that if a single ray of sunlight should strike the eyes of the son he is expecting to be born soon, his son will die. And so the king has a castle built inside a mountain where the son is born and raised, never seeing daylight . . .

Until he reaches the age of manhood and meets a beautiful girl who comes to his birthday party inside the mountain castle. They fall in love and set a date to be married. But she doesn't want to live inside a mountain for the rest of her life, so she tries to convince the prince that the prophecy is false, that sunlight cannot kill him. And even though he was raised to believe in the prophecy, he decides to take her hand on the night before their wedding, and go outside beneath the stars and wait for the sun to rise. . .

And when the first ray of light strikes the prince's eyes, he falls back and dies.

Sometimes, what we believe, though it may be false, is stronger than the truth.

In my illustration, the young man (according to the story) is having nightmares, and the girl is trying to help him cope with them, she is trying to convince him that his fears are imaginary . . .
